June 14, 2012 — The Dallas area was struck by a sudden and severe hailstorm Wednesday night, with hail the size of baseballs in some areas causing extensive property damage.
Starting around 5 PM, storms began to tear through the Lakewood area with rotating clouds causing serious concern to meteorologists as hail suddenly began to pelt motorists and parked vehicles throughout the area, causing serious damage to hundreds of cars and trucks as well as damage to skylights in the NorthPark Center and the trademark marquee at the historic Lakewood Theater.
Other areas suffering damage included the Dallas Arboretum, where parts of the outdoor exhibit of Dale Chihuly’s glass sculptures were damaged in the storm. In East Dallas, over 6,000 homes were temporarily without power due to the storms.
Body shops and glass repair businesses are still playing catch up from Spring storms, and are sure to face massive workloads as repair jobs come in from the extensive damage caused by the storm in East Dallas, Irving, and Grand Prarie, all of which experienced damage to skylights and vehicles.
Some instances of damage left vehicles entirely undrivable, with shattered windshields leaving broken glass inside and around the cars as well as deep dents in the metal of vehicles’ hoods and roofs. Motorist Laura McKinney reported sustaining extensive damage to her 2010 Lexus sedan which was parked outside during the storm, just two weeks after getting the vehicle out of the body shop for $12,000 of repairs it needed after a hail storm two months prior in Coppell.
Nick Hampshire of the National Weather Service said that there were indications of an incoming severe storm, but that baseball size hail is impossible to predict due to its rarity. Hampshire noted that, “This will definitely be up there in the rankings of Dallas’ worst hailstorms in the last 10 years.”
The damage caused by hail can be incredibly costly to repair, and without insurance assistance, many individuals and business owners may be unable to pay for the repairs that their vehicles and businesses need.
