Burke fire disastrous for two businesses

A fire destroyed two Gregory County businesses early Friday morning.

According to the Burke Rural Fire Association, the fire originated at Vosker’s Bar and Grill located on Main Street. The fire then continued to spread to the Southern Dakota Insurance Company, which is connected to the bar.

Once firefighters arrived to the scene, both buildings were already beyond the point of saving. Instead, focus was directed to the next closest buildings. In all, six fire departments were involved in fighting the fire, including Burke, Gregory, Winner, Fairfax, Dallas, and Bonestell.

After all was said and done, nearly 175,000 gallons of water was used in extinguishing the fire. Luckily, other than the two businesses which were destroyed, no other nearby buildings were damaged and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is still being determined.
